Shadow the Hedgehog is a major character in SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog series. He debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001 and is known as the Ultimate Life Form.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow is introduced as the result of Professor Gerald Robotnik's research aboard the Space Colony ARK. The game's story connects Shadow's past to Maria Robotnik and to the military raid on the ARK. Shadow initially pursues a promise through distorted memories before remembering Maria's wish and helping stop the ARK from colliding with Earth.
The 2005 game Shadow the Hedgehog expands that origin through Black Doom and the Black Arms, while its final story resolves the competing claims surrounding Shadow's past.
After his 2001 debut, Shadow returns in Sonic Heroes as a member of Team Dark. He leads the branching 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog game, receives a dedicated campaign in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and continues appearing across racing, platforming, and ensemble Sonic titles.

Shadow is portrayed as a speed-focused character capable of keeping pace with Sonic. His Air Shoes are a defining part of his movement design. Chaos Control is his best-known Chaos ability and is commonly performed with a Chaos Emerald; across the series, Shadow also uses other Chaos techniques and combat skills.
Shadow Generations adds Doom Powers tied to Black Doom. These gameplay abilities alter how Shadow moves and interacts with stages without replacing his established base design.
Maria Robotnik is the emotional center of Shadow's origin. Professor Gerald Robotnik created Shadow as part of Project Shadow. Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega form Team Dark with him beginning in Sonic Heroes. Sonic is repeatedly positioned as Shadow's high-speed counterpart and rival, while later stories also show them cooperating against shared threats.
Shadow's core design uses black fur with red streaks, red eyes, white chest fur, white gloves, gold rings, and distinctive hover-style Air Shoes.
